A good dog life doesn't have to include dog parks. They are not dog park dogs as a general rule. It's true that dog aggression is expected of her breed (it's even included in the APBT breed standard). We can't go to dog parks and we avoid most hiking trails because of the number of off-leash dogs who approach us, not knowing she's going try and kill them.Īre there any other dog parents here who have a similar situation and maybe have success stories and tips to share? I'm afraid people think I'm an asshole when we walk through our neighborhood because of how stern and dog-avoidant I have to be to keep her away from other dogs.

I love her and I want to give her a good dog life but I don't know how to help her. The trainer informed me it's just a characteristic of her breed and encouraged me to avoid other dogs. But she is almost more aggressive now that she's home. It was expensive ($2k), came with great recommendations, and seemed legit. Recently, I sent her to a four week dog training camp. She twists and turns while fighting me as I try to restrain her, to the point of her actually skinning the fur from her paws, and splitting her paw pads open. Two days later she wiggled out of her harness to climb a tree while violently chasing a squirrel. Once, she wiggled out of her collar and attacked a dog in the process of passing away on its front lawn. She becomes unhinged when she sees other dogs. She is the perfect dog in almost every way possible, until she sees another animal. I adopted her this summer, she's my family, and I love her very much. I have a three year old American Pit Bull Terrier. I'm so glad this exists because I really need help with my reactive dog. This is my first time posting to this community.
